newline makes premium notebooks for software engineers and architects. We design tools for the people who design systems.
The name is borrowed from the escape character \n, which in programming is used to create a new line. It represents what thousands of developers and engineers have typed thousands of times — but it also represents a thought that escapes us without a notebook or pencil.

We were looking for a notebook designed for the way engineers actually work — system diagrams, architecture decisions, daily planning — and found nothing on the market that fit. Existing options were either generic dot-grid lifestyle products or planner formats built around someone else's workflow.
So we built three.

The product does not define the values. The values define the product. Five principles, in priority order — each one a constraint that shapes every decision we make.

A small batch of well-made things beats a million mediocre ones. The environment shapes the practitioner. A dot grid calibrated for system diagrams, structural graphs, and idea notation. A binding that opens flat and stays there. Dense, high-quality paper that holds any technical pen without hesitation.

Each notebook does one thing well, for one practice. daemon is for the engineer who thinks in parallel — prose and sketch on the same spread. schema is for the architect who decides in writing. cron is for the person who plans the day before it starts. One format. One workflow. No notebook tries to do all three.

We manufacture in France and treat that as a feature, not a cost. Paper sourced in Europe. Supply chain documented. Short production runs at a printer we have visited in person. The European industrial tradition is one of precision, traceability, and craft at scale. We build inside that tradition.

Every product decision is documented, justified, and falsifiable. We market in specifications, not superlatives. When asked why the dot grid is 5mm and not 4 or 6, we answer with reasoning. When asked why the cron page starts at 06h00, we explain the decision. We do not pretend other choices are equivalent.

Our products earn their place by being useful, not by being aspirational. They will look exactly the same on your desk in three years. There is no limited edition. No seasonal colorway. No collaborations with streetwear labels. The notebook is a tool. It should work. That is the entire brief.
